How do so many people appear to stay naturally wrinkle-free, with a youthful volume and glow to their skin?
Fillers are used to add volume to the face, creating a natural, effortless look. They’re popular with men and women of all ages and they can help slow down the visible aging process and create lush lips, high cheekbones, or to fill in areas of skin where collagen and elasticity have been lost.
Fillers are an aesthetic medicine treatment that you may have heard of, but what exactly are they? And what do you need to know beforehand?
What Are Hyaluronic Acid Fillers?
More commonly known as dermal fillers, hyaluronic acid fillers are a safe, FDA-approved product used to treat volume loss in the face.
Hyaluronic acid is naturally found in our skin, helping keep our skin plump and hydrated. However, as we age, volume loss occurs, and our skin loses its youthful appearance.
By injecting dermal fillers, you can replenish and rehydrate your skin, adding back the volume you’ve lost through the normal aging process.
They can improve the structure of your face, fill in facial folds and deep wrinkles, and add volume to areas such as cheeks and lips.
Dermal fillers should always be administered by a trained medical professional. After your initial consultation, the treatment can be done within the hour, followed by minimal downtime.
What Areas Can Fillers Improve?
Hyaluronic acid in fillers is used to restore the volume in certain areas of the face.
One of the most popular areas to inject is the lips. Whether you’ve lost volume over time or you just weren’t born with full, pouty lips; fillers can be used to add height, fullness, and projection to thin lips.
Many of us have naturally thin lips or have thinner lips due to smoking or the aging process. Fillers work well in this case and can be used in both the top and lower lip.
Cheeks are another popular area to inject. As we age, our fat pads underneath the skin separate, giving our cheeks a sagging or sunken-in appearance, which can prematurely age us beyond our years.
With fillers, you can create high, sculpted cheekbones, lifting up the skin with youthful volume.
Dermal fillers are also used to fill in lines created by age, such as smile lines, deep wrinkles. They also work well to revitalize tear troughs, enhance the chin, and to create a more defined border to lips.
How Long Do Fillers Last? Are they reversible?
Most fillers last up to a year, with patients often coming in for a touch up around six months after treatment. Fillers aren’t permanent and can be dissolved if you’re not happy with the outcome.
We have had patients come to us because they went overboard on fillers. Rather than wait it out for several months or sometimes even a year- we can dissolve the hyaluronic based filler and start from scratch. Our goal is to give you a natural looking result, so if you are unhappy with results from hyaluronic acid – based fillers, we can fix it.
How Are Fillers Different from Botox?
You may have heard about Botox, an anti-wrinkle injectable, and are wondering how it compares to filler.
Both are popular treatments but have different purposes. Wrinkle relaxers are mainly used to treat wrinkles caused by movement of muscles in the face, such as those around our eyes and forehead.
The use of Botox temporarily stops the muscles from contracting, making the wrinkles go away. Many patients use a combination of both fillers and wrinkle relaxers to achieve their desired look— it’s safe to administer both in the same appointment.
Is the Treatment Painful?
Your Hamilton Aesthetics provider will numb you topically with numbing cream prior to the treatment but all dermal filler products have a local anesthetic. This helps reduce the pain and make the procedure more comfortable.
When Can Do I See Results?
One of the great things about hyaluronic acid fillers is that results are instant! As soon as the product has been injected, you’ll be able to see the gorgeous results.
Patients love seeing their results right away without having to wait, part of why it’s such a popular and effective cosmetic treatment. You can resume normal activity immediatly after but you will want to wait 24 hours to get in a strenuous workout.
What Are the Side Effects?
Side effects are minimal with fillers. However, as with any cosmetic treatment, they are possible.
Patients may experience bruising at the injection site, redness, tenderness for a day or so, and itchiness. Swelling is a common side effect as well, especially if the lips have been injected.
It’s best to have fillers done when you are able to take it easy the next day, as some patients may prefer to stay home while the swelling goes down.
